  • Petrified Forest was set aside as a national monument in 1906 to preserve and protect the petrified wood for its scientific value. It is recognized today for having so much more, including a broad representation of the Late Triassic paleo-ecosystem, significant human history, clear night skies, fragile grasslands ecosystem, and unspoiled scenic vistas.

  • I arrived at Bright Angel Point two hours prior to shooting this photo before the sun rised. We were staying at a cabin nearby the Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim. When you are at the lodge, the views of the grandure and vastness of the scenary are incredible. It is hard to imagine the tremendous uplift that has occurred, leaving the canyon's North Rim 1,000 feet/300 meters higher than the South Rim. Bright Angel Point is 8,148 feet/2,484 meters above sea level (5,780 feet/1,762 meters above the Colorado River), to put this distance in perspective, the Washington Monument is 555 feet 5 1/8 inches (169.294 m) so the Grand Canyon at Bright Angel Point is over ten times the height of the Washington Monument above the Colorado River.
